On August 1, 1914, Ernest Shackleton sailed from London with a crew of twenty-seven on board the Endurance. Hisgoal was to be the first explorer to cross the Antarctic continent. In January 1915, the Endurance became trapped in pack ice off the Antarctic coast. The following fall, the crew watched in horror as the ship was crushed by millions of tons of ice, like the jaws of a gigantic vice, closing in from all sides. The ship sank a few weeks later, leaving Shackleton and his crew trapped in Antarctica for months. As a second long winter closed in, with the lazy sun barely peeping above the horizon, Shackleton decided their only hope for survival would be for a group to travel to a whaling station on South Georgia Island more than 800 miles away. Shackleton and four other men set out in a twenty-two-foot whaling boat to cross the worst bit of ocean on the globe, the Drake Passage. At times the waves were fifty feet high and the winds rose to hurricane force.


Meanwhile, the other men hunkered down on Elephant Island to endure the long, polar winter in a temporary shelter made from what they were able to rescue from the shipwrecked Endurance. Would their companions ever make it to South Georgia and return with a rescue party? The odds suggested that the sea would swallow those who went for help and that the marooned men would slowly die of cold and sickness, since the civilized world was wholly unaware of their plight. Each day in the dusky semi-light they would climb to the lookout bluff and gaze wistfully out to sea, hoping, praying that somehow their friends would make it back. Could they possibly cross the roughest sea on the globe in a small boat under winter conditions?

The Epic Story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance




Shackleton and his brave crew indeed accomplished the seemingly impossible, and after a sixteen-day voyage, landed on South Georgia Island.But strongwinds forced them onto the wrong side of the island. How could they reach the whaling station? Perilous precipices and an ice-covered mountain range blocked the way. Leaving two of the group behind with the boat, the other three started to climb the ridge but found it impassable. Retreating, they attempted a second approach but found it equally inhospitable. Retreating again, they tried a third way, making it by late afternoon to the razorback crest at 4,500 feet.


If they were to stay at that altitude, they would freeze to death during the night. Risking their lives, they made a human toboggan, sitting on rope coils and locking their legs around each other’s bodies. They whisked down, down, down at a frightful speed, emerging from the run at a lower altitude, where their lives would be safe from the bitter cold. Then, during the night they trudged on, avoiding deep crevasses, ever onward, sensing that not only their lives but the lives of twenty-fiveothers depended upon them. They had to make it.


At 6:30 a.m., they heard the wake-up whistle of the South Georgia whaling outpost, and before long they were enthusiastically welcomed, warmed, and fed.


Rescue expeditions were organized. Three different ships tried to reach Elephant Island but wereturned back by ice floes. But spring was coming, and the ice was starting to melt. Now the sun was warming the forgotten continent down under, bringing a fresh feeling of hope to the men.


On August 30, 1916, near the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere, a watchman among the marooned men on Elephant Island again climbed to the top of the lookout bluff. His eye searched the horizon; then he saw it—a boat, the Chilean naval ship Yelcho, coming their way! The men sent up smoke signals, lest they be passed by. Could it be that Shackleton was coming to rescue them? In a moment their prolonged winter depression and dejection vanished like the fog in the strong beams of the noontime sun. Elation and joy reigned instead of darkness and despair. Help was coming after the many long days of winter darkness. Meanwhile, on board Yelcho, Shackleton scanned the campsite with his binoculars and counted as the men emerged from the upturned lifeboat that served as their crude shelter. One, two, three—all twenty-three of his crew had survived! Incredible! Sunshine and tenacity had made the difference.


Have you ever felt the sunshine of hope come to your soul after a long, dark night of despair? There’s something about the rays of warm sun beaming down on the earth that makes us feel refreshed and full of hope, no matter what obstacles may loom ahead. However, the benefits of sunshine come not only from how it makes us feel emotionally. Sunlight is an essential factor in overall good health. Is sunlight a missing “nutrient” in your life?

A Harvard School of Public Health study found that adequate vitamin D levels reduce cancer risk by 30 percent.  If everyone had adequate vitamin D levels in their bloodstream, “It would be equivalent to eliminating a big portion of cancer.”

A well-known researcher has said that the power of having high levels of vitamin D in the blood to prevent cancer is GREATER than the power of cigarette smoking to cause cancer.  Talk about a public health revolution!







Disease prevention increases with higher vitamin D scores


Dr. C. F. Garland has prepared a chart of the incidence of thirteendisease conditions showing that disease incidence goes down significantly when vitamin D levels go up compared to a baseline vitamin D blood level of 25ng/ml.[2]We will mention only five of these conditions.

In order to find out your blood level of vitamin D, it is essential to have your physician test your blood’s Serum 25 (OH)D level. There is no good substitute. One of three individuals in the U.S. will die of cancer. Much of that is completely avoidable.

Two doctors attending a lecture by Dr. Robert Heaney on the clinical benefits of vitamin D asked him, “So how much vitamin D should we give our patients for cancer prevention?” To this he replied, “Well, you are the doctors, how much cancer do you want to prevent?” Both doctors smiled at his answer. It was time to get off the fence and get their patient’s vitamin D blood levels into the most protective range.


It’s amazing to see how many cancers and the high percentage of multiple sclerosis, types 1 and 2 diabetes, heart attacks, fractures, infections, and immune disorders can be prevented. All this could happen if people maintain their blood levels of 25(OH) vitamin D above 32 ng/ml, with the goal being above 50ng/ml. To prevent some future health problems, you may wish to ask your physician to test your vitamin D level.

Interpreting vitamin D scoresin the US and outside the US


Serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels should be minimally above 32 ng/ml as tested in the USA (above 80 nmol/L as tested in other countries).

The optimum range is 50–100 ng/ml.

(The ng/ml score x 2.5 = nmol/L score.)


To maintain proper vitamin D levels, an adult with light skin needs about ten minutes of sunlight on bare skin daily without sunscreen between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. In seasons or places of low sunshine, vitamin D can be taken orally as a supplement.[3][TL1]  Amazingly large numbers of people even in tropical lands avoid sun exposure and are vitamin D deficient. The recommendation of 600–800 International Units (IU) of oral vitamin D daily is now considered by top researchers to be totally inadequate. The blood test will show if you need to increase your vitamin D by oral supplementation.

How can I find out if I am vitamin D deficient?

Many of those who are aware of the value of vitamin D to avoid cancer and other catastrophic diseases ask, “How can I find out if I am vitamin D deficient?”In order to find out your blood level of vitamin D, it is essential to have the lab test Serum 25(OH) D. Consult your physician. There is no good substitute.


Vitamin D from sunlight and/or oral supplementation is essential. However, lab tests that check vitamin D levels indicate a deficiency for most people. Current research shows that proper levels of vitamin D may prevent a number of catastrophic diseases. One of three individuals in the United States will die of cancer. Many of those cases are completely avoidable. That is why many physicians who are knowledgeable on current research prescribe high doses of vitamin D supplements in tablets or as drops if the patient’s bloodwork indicates low vitamin D levels.


After hearing a presentation titled “Sunlight—the Miracle Drug,” three women in a small group shared that when their vitamin D lab reports came back to them, they were surprised how low their levels were, especially since they were frequently in the sun. Their physicians gave them the same reason for their low scores: In Michigan, USA, for several winter months the sun does not rise to the forty-five degrees above the horizon required to give vitamin D to human beings. All three women were given a supplement of vitamin D3 (2,000+ IU per day). For acute deficiency of vitamin D and related disease, physicians may recommend higher therapeutic dosages. All three women were faithful to take the supplement, eager to avoid the risk of future problems, and they all felt better.


The effect of too much sun

Maybe you’re saying, “I’m afraid that too much sun might give me skin cancer!” There is a dilemma about sun exposure. You can get too little and you can get too much. It is pleasurable to lie in the sun on a beautiful beach for hours with friends. The breeze is blowing and the cares of life are pushed from your thoughts as you say, “I am getting an impressive suntan.” However, beware! The young and the not so young often feel invulnerable, indestructible, and safe in the sun. There is no harm in getting a nice suntan. However, while trying to get a suntan, many frequently get asunburn. Have you ever experienced over-exposure to sunshine? Were there any side effects as a result? What are the dangers of sunburn?


One of the dangers of sun overexposure is damage to the eyes. Too much ultraviolet light can be a cause of macular degeneration and cataracts later in life, especially in people with light-colored eyes. Sunglasses protect vision.


Skin cancer epidemic

Did you know?

More than half of all new cancers in the United States are skin cancers.If in your life you have been sunburned five or more times, your chance of skin cancer doubles.Skin damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation occurring before age twenty often shows up at midlife.

Mike loved surfboarding. He frequented the sunny Hawaiian beaches. His nice bronze-colored skin brought glances from his admirers. But then a carcinoma cancer appeared on his nose. He almost freaked out when the dermatologist surgeon got through with him and he saw the hole where a part of his nose used to be. The good news: the deadly cancer was gone and reconstructive surgery was successful.


Be sensible in the sun. Although exposure to sunlight has many benefits, in no case should one stay unprotected in the sun long enough to burn. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) rated at least 15 to protect your skin from too much sun and the danger of skin cancer.

Positive effect of sunlight—pain relief

Are you looking for an inexpensive painkiller? You might want to try out one that is free! Sunlight may help.


A study of eighty-nine post-operative patients found that the forty-four whose hospital rooms were on the sunnier side of the building experienced less pain and stress than did the forty-five whose rooms were on the dimmer side. Patients who were randomized to the bright side took 22 percent less painkillers during their hospital stay than those on the dim side. Dr. Jeffrey Walch attributed the difference to the fact that exposure to sunlight increases the levels of the hormone serotonin in the body, which acts as a painkiller.[4] So when you go to the hospital, ask for the sunniest room, if possible.


Negative effects of too little sunlight—SAD disease

Peggy grew up thinking that winter depression was normal. She did well in school and worked hard on her studies until winter came, and then academics became a challenge. Life was a burden. She wanted to commit suicide but didn’t have energy to do it. Two marriages failed, and at age fifty-two she found herself almost without friends. While married, she had no sex drive, left laundry until spring, and felt incapacitated during the winter months. It was when she was diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and treated with light therapy that her life totally changed during the decreased sunlight of wintertime. Now, with therapy, she feels energetic all year round and is happier with her life than ever before.[5]

Seasonal Affective Disorder (“SAD”)

• Definition:  Emotional depression due to less sunlight during the shorter days of winter

• 35 million people affected in U.S.

            10 million – Depression

            25 million – Mild version



Other millions in Scandinavia, Canada,[TL2]  and other high latitude countries are affected. Dr. Norman Rosenthal and a team at the National Institute of Mental Health were the first to describe and name Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). They found a connection between decreased sunlight hours during the winter and symptoms of depression and low energy.

The increased appetite for carbohydratesmay be the body’s attempt to increase its energy levels. Women are more susceptible to SAD, making up 75 percent of all cases.

Standard treatment for S.A.D. is Light Therapy.


Physicians prescribe exposure to a light box thirty minutes after getting up in the morning. This stimulates production of the hormone serotonin and gives the body energy for the new day.The treatment may be taken at other times of the day, but preferably not in the evening. Light boxes need to have particular technical specifications and should be purchased from a reliable source. Light therapy should be supervised by a trained health professional. However, just having blinds and curtains open, letting the sunshine in, and providing sufficient light during waking hours makes the home more cheerful.


Beth was in deep depression. She liked being in a dark room and became angry when her care-givers opened the blinds to let in sunshine. Her depression continued, interfering with recovery, and may have contributed to her untimely death. Sunlight might have helped in bringing her hope, healing, and more happiness, but she was unwilling to let light into her life.


How to avoid the winter blues?

  • Get regular exercise outside or inside.
  • Eat adequate folic acid and Omega-3 foods (green leafy vegetables, citrus, walnuts, flaxseeds, soybeans, navy beans, kidney beans, tofu).
  • Take a minimum of 2000 IU of vitamin D3 daily, more if tests indicate a low vitamin D3 level.
  • Eat five to nine servings of nutritious fruits and veggies.
  • Do a good deed for someone and cheer them up.
  • Keep curtains open. Let light and sunshine in.
  • Have bright light in the home and at the workplace.
  • Enjoy being outside in the sunlight even if weather is cool/cold.
  • Take a winter vacation in a warm, sunny location.
  • Move to an area where there is sunshine most winter days.

People like the brightness and the cheeriness of a warm light illuminating in the evening or on a dark night. Quarrels and irritability lessen when there is sufficient light. Light makes the heart happier and gives a cozy feeling inside.


Light for life


At times in our lives it seems that we all face the winter of illness, trauma, and tragedy. As the winter of advancing years comes, there is the SAD disease of Sickness, Aging, and Death. But God will be with you through all the seasons of life—from youth to old age. He will never leave you nor forsake you—ever! Jesus is the Light of the world, and He cares when you go through SAD experiences as you become older.

There was the long, dark winter of Antarctica when there was no sun but a lot of depression and discouragement.



They longed with all their hearts for two things: the return of the sun and a savior to rescue them.

The stranded men could not save themselves, but Shackleton crossed the roughest sea on the planet in winter, and with two trusted colleagues, hiked razor-edged mountain ridges that human beings had never traversed before. During that night, as they skirted crevasses, where one false step meant death, the three of them had an uncanny sense that a fourth Being was moving step by step with them. They fulfilled their mission, returned with a rescue ship to Elephant Island, and Sir Ernest Shackleton became the savior of twenty-seven men. Not one of them perished!

It is the return of the SUN that brings warmth, comfort, new life, and a reprieve from the depression and hopelessness of the long winter night.

This is also true for you. Perhaps you are surrounded by the winter of divorce, family crisis, financial predicament, depression, and despair. But in the darkness of trial, you will find that Onehas crossed the icy waters and braved the seemingly impassable mountain ridges to bring you help. He is there walking with you, step by step, as you cross almost impossible obstacles. That One is Jesus, the Light of the World, the Sun of Righteousness. Do you want His light to brighten your life and His presence to guide and rescue you?


Jesus is with you, no matter what you are going through in your life. He walks beside you even in darkness, when you feel you’ve lost hope. Don’t be afraid to turn to Him, asking for the light He has promised, to bring joy and peace into your life. Trust Him.

A Summary of Recent Expert Scientific Opinion on Vitamin D


Edward Giovannucci, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, states “that 30 people die of these cancers for every one who dies of skin cancer.”[6] So we need to put exposure to sunshine and the potential of causing cancer in perspective with cancer prevention!


The majority of Americans, Canadians, and Europeans have low blood levels of vitamin D and don’t know it. Millions suffer from unexplained illnesses and chronic disorders that appear to be related to vitamin D.[7] Obesity is one contributing factor to vitamin D deficiency because surplus body fat absorbs vitamin D, thus decreasing its level in the blood.


World epidemic

“Vitamin D is by far the greatest deficiency in the civilized world. Surveys show[TL3]  that at least 70% of all Americans are vitamin D deficient, and up to 85% of African-American women of child-bearing age are deficient. 48% of young girls aged 9 to 11 are deficient. 76% of pregnant mothers are severely vitamin D deficient causing widespread deficiencies in their unborn children. 90% of all hospital patients are deficient, and 99% of nursing home residents are deficient. 65% of Chicago residents are deficient and even doctors living insouthern Florida are 42% deficient. It is estimated that at least 1billion people worldwide are deficient.”[8]

Although vitamin D is not technically a vitamin and works more as a hormone, it is a major factor in regulating many body processes. [TL4]

  • The most nutritious diets will not give sufficient vitamin D to prevent disease; sun exposure is essential. Every tissue and cell in the body needs vitamin D to function at its optimal level.


Cancer studies show:

  • When vitamin D was given to mice with colon cancer, tumor reduction was observed. Vitamin D helps to prevent or turn off cancer.2000 IU or more a day can cut the risk of colon cancer by two-thirds.If a smoker takes 2000+ IU of vitamin D, it will not completely negate the cancer risk from smoking.High levels of vitamin D will not prevent a heavy drinker from esophageal cancer.Men working inside get prostate cancer four years earlier than those who work outdoors.Cancer patients who get high doses of vitamin D during chemo treatment have fewer side effects, blood clots, and serious complications.Women with dark skin are at a greater risk of aggressive breast cancer but supplementation of vitamin D and sun exposure may reduce risks.


Diabetes:Where there is insufficient sunshine, children who take a vitamin D supplement have 80 percent less chance of getting diabetes.


Heart:In areas where there is a short supply of sunshine, supplemental vitamin D and calcium can help protect against high blood pressure and heart disease. In the winter, when there is less sunshine, there are more deaths from heart disease. Vitamin D can lower the level of inflammation, which contributes to heart disease.
